What are small, incremental steps one can make to fuel change in their media organization?

A brief break from my art coverage for the the carnival of journalism which is now back! and Will Sullivan is hosting. So we are all tasked with the question above.

  1. There’s really only one point I want to make and that’s culture. cultural changes are unlikely to be considered “small” and “incremental” but I think you have to strike at the core if you want to make real changes. Peacemeal attempts will mean slow progress and by then many traditional media organizations will be finished. So how do you change the culture? Its tough. But it has to come from the top. You need to mold the culture into one that accepts and welcomes change. That is crucial. Because it is a willingness to change that allows for development and improvement. How do you get people to embrace change? You sell them the story of the advances that will come from it. You encourage innovation and forward thinking and develop a culture that doesn’t demonise failures. Its a very hard job. But far from impossible. This is the best place to start. Get people to accept change then you can mold the organization as is necessary.
