two random 1.24 am thoughts - last shadow puppets & the art business

1. i read the piece in the sunday times about alexa chung and alex turner. very fawning. no real problem with that. alex is clearly talented. i’ve recently started listening to the last shadow puppets and i am feeling their tracks. as for alexa? well….she has the looks clearly. i would like to see her take on more challenging tv roles so i can really assess her talent. the media does love these celebrity couples. good luck to them….

2. i watched a documentary last night on the art world. some disgruntled (though perhaps justified) old man lamented the fact that the value of art had become its price and not its beauty. he was dumbstruck by the fact some people compared warhol to da vinci. he also though jeff koons lacked stylistic variety. maybe so but the more worrying aspect of the documentary seem to suggest prices have been gassed up to support collectors. the sunday times also wrote an article about this. clearly someone with 100 warhols has a vested interest in maintaing his rep. he may even go so far as to hire a proxy to bid on his works to aritificially inflate the perceived value of warhol. underhand stuff aka capitialism.

3. It would be sad to see art become simply a question of dollars but then it has always been. its just now the world galleries (excluding dubai) cannot afford to compete with oligarchs. thankfully many of these billionaires loan their works of art to public galleries. but not everyone does. it would be a sham to loose them….

My interest in this subject led me to find a masters degree in the art business. looks like a cool course for the art lovers.
